Wines of the week 30th September 2019

Wines of the week 30th September 2019

This week I tasted a fantastically priced Syrah from Chile, a Portuguese powerhouse, a single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and one of the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape I have ever tried. My week was tough ;)

Casa Lapostolle Syrah Cuvée Alexandre Apalta Vineyard - 93 Points . -$26 CAD

There is so much going on in this wine. The wine is of a deep purple colour, with aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries compote, violets, liquorice and black pepper, the palate was medium to full-bodied, with velvety tannins, lush black fruit covered with cacao along with cassis, vanilla, spice and a touch of crushed stone. The finish was smooth, elegant and long.

Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro Vinha da Francisca 2015 - 96 Points - $100 CAD

Wow! The nose is full of ripe dark blackberries, black cherries, tobacco, smoke, violets, coffee, the palate was serious, full-bodied with elegant tannins, black fruit, dark chocolate, espresso, black pepper and a long elegant finish. If you like Cabernet you will fall in love with this wine. If you are blind-tasted with this wine you will think Californian High-quality Cabernet but it is from Portugal!

Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016 - 97 points - $140 CAD

Wow, this is gorgeous! The nose is full of ripe black fruit, along with kirsch, black cherry liquor, liquorice, you know this is a powerhouse just on the nose when this hits the palate the fun begins, this full-bodied powerhouse is just rocking and how can you not just smile and open all your bottles now? If you don't have any, you are seriously missing out. The palate is dominated by sweet black fruit compote, liquorice and black pepper, a little meaty and a kick of spice, yet this is so beautifully woven together with smooth tannins and a wonderfully long and elegant finish. I cannot wait to see how this develops.
