Wines of the week 29th April 2019

This week I tasted a wonderfully balanced and elegant Chardonnay from Sonoma. The second wine from Dominus, which could easily be a first wine and one of my favourite Syrah from South Africa
Kistler Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard 2014 - 93 Points - $125 CAD
The fruit here is a lot less pure and the minerality less crisp compared to the 2015. I enjoyed the soft yellow apple and Asian pear, along with soft brioche notes, and the palate round with an elegant long lasting length. This wine never disappoints.

Dominus Napanook Red 2013 - 94 Points . -$100 CAD
Hard to believe this is a second wine. This has a wonderful fruit profile with a refined and structured core. Deep ruby with aromas of blackberries, dark cherry, pepper, mushroom and a little vanilla(oak). This is a medium-full bodied wine with polished tannins, along with characteristics on the palate, of plush freshly picked dark and red fruits, fresh herbs and a floral like texture at the front. The palate is perfectly balanced and the long length allows you to enjoy this wine for a 10-20 seconds longer than expected. The quality of this second wine is really impressive. I have another bottle of this and will not touch it for 5 years, just to allow the tannins to be perfectly integrated.

Rust en Vrede Syrah 2014 - 92 points - $30 CAD
Always a classic Syrah from South Africa, aromas of dark red cherries, blackberries, violets, this is a medium-full bodied wine with chewy tannins, the palate showed characteristics of crunchy red fruit, liquorice, vanilla, spice and dried violets. There was good acidity, with a medium well balanced finished. Good value Syrah from South Africa, Drink now
