Wines of the week 20th May 2019

Points on Wine - Wines of the week 20th May 2019

This week I tasted a fruity rosé wine from Bourgogne. A 1er Cru level Chardonnay from New Zealand. A fantastically valued Nebbiolo from Barbaresco and a classic Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir.

Kumeu River Chardonnay Maté's Vineyard 2016 - 95 Points - $70 CAD

So let me start by saying, this is a 1er cru probably Puligny or Chassagne style and level. In a blind tasting I went straight for one of these, so was surprised to hear it was from NZ! Golden colour, with aromas of orange and tangerine zest, wet stone, ripe stone fruit and a little smoke? The palate was just so well balanced with the acidity and soft textures of the stone fruit along with nectarines and white peach tart. There is also a certain smokiness which I enjoy. The finish is just so well balanced and it lingers for minutes after. This has to be one of the best NZ Chardonnay available.

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco 2015 - 93 points - $48 CAD

This is a monster of a wine, very concentrated with nice ripe dark cherries and chalky tannins. Tannins very present at this stage, def more of the ripe fruit than the 2014. This is developing nicely.

Frédéric Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2016 - 92 points - $80 CAD

Quite concentrated on the nose with aromas of dark black cherries, black currents and a little fresh earth, dark mushrooms, on the palate I found silky tannins along with a more serious nearly meaty style of pinot, mushrooms and ripe dark cherry compote. Nicely balanced acidity with a good length.
