Wines of the week 10th June 2019

This week I tasted a bone dry Riesling from Alsace, a Carménère from Chile and a classic Margaux from France.

Kientzler Riesling 2017 - 90 Points . -$25 CAD

Wonderfully bone dry Riesling from Alsace, I am a big fan of dry Rieslings and with global warming etc I feel that Alsace is struggling to keep their rieslings dry, yes I know that 9 g/l is a max of Alsace AOC Rieslings but I can't help to enjoy this wine at I believe 2 g/l. This has fantastically crisp acidity, Sharp Granny Smith Apple, wet stones, this is tight and tense with a straight finish. Like an espresso in the morning, this wakes you up!

Montes Purple Angel 2015 - 95 Points - $60 CAD

Drinking perfectly now, why wait? This is phenomenal, aromas of blackberry, cassis, tobacco, green pepper and vanilla, the palate is lush with medium firm tannin, I found strong characteristics of sweet black fruit, pepper, liquorice and sweet Christmas cake spices. There is this wonderfully lush and filling mid palate with an elegant style finish

Château Deyrem Valentin 2015 - 92 points - $35 CAD

This is a star buy. The colour is a bright youthful ruby. On the nose, I found lots of violets, blackberries and espresso, on the palate I found soft dark red and blue lively fruits, espresso, chocolate and medium tannins, this is rich yet silky and elegant wine, classic Margaux for a fraction of the larger estates. Drinking well now but will be better in 5+ years time.
