Hutton Vale Farm - A Secret Australian Winery!

Hutton Vale Farm is the most famous Australian winery you have never heard of. Why? In 1912 the Mount Edelstone Vineyard (Henschke) was planted by the Angas family who then took cuttings to start their own vineyard just adjacent. This working farm produces some of the most elegant wines in Eden Vally, which easily rivals their neighbours Henschke in terms of quality, yet little is exported.

Hutton Vale Farm has just celebrated its 176th year under the Angas family ownership. Stuart and Caitlin Angas are now the seventh generation and are driving forward with a focus on producing the best wines in Eden valley. What we have to remember is that Hutton Vale Farm is not just a winery but predominantly a farm who produce some of the most sort-after wines not just in Australia, but the World. Their Hutton Vale Farm Shiraz uses cuttings from the Mount Edelstone (Henschke) Vineyard and is easily ranked among the best wines in Australia. Other wines produced include their estate Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache-Mataro. Their minimalistic approach to winemaking ensures the land speaks through the bottle and not the winery. All their wines are estate-grown, sustainable and fully showcase the terroir from which they come from. Hutton Vale Farm is a true Australian Icon

Hutton Vale Farm have old world elegance in a new world setting, you would be good to identify their wines from Australia. Here are my notes of 4 of their wines I recently tasted:

Hutton Vale Riesling - 93 points

Slightly off-dry Riesling from a tiny producer in Eden Valley which barely exports. Classic Riesling nose of green apple, lime juice, ginger, honeysuckle and melon. The palate was not bone dry, however crisp and refreshing, with freshly squeezed lime juice, lemon sherbet along with striking minerality and bright acidity, the finish was clean. At just over 10% Alcohol and less than $30 CAD a bottle this is a steal. Wow! So much character to this wine.

Hutton Vale Shiraz - 92 points

Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark plum, Christmas cake spices, cured bacon, smoke, and eucalyptus. The palate was full-bodied with refined dark fruits and spices, quite bright along with polished if not a little drying tannins, leading to a medium finish. Certainly old world in style, you would be good to pick this out as Eden Valley.

Hutton Vale Cabernet Sauvignon - 92 points

This is very old world in style, aromas of bramble tree berries, dark plums, tobacco leaf, leather, graphite, pepper, potting soil and a touch of vanilla, the palate was medium-bodied with dusty tannins, restrained dark fruit glided gracefully across the palate, along with baking spices, lightly crushed gravel, iron crust leads to a medium yet refined finish. This is a serious Cabernet and certainly brings you to Bordeaux, approachable, yet far away from the sometimes ripe and jammy new world Cabernets currently available.

Hutton Vale Grenache Mataro - 91 points

Aromas of dark plums, cherries, strawberries, liquorice, anise and a little charcuterie. The palate was savoury and medium bodied yet with medium-fine tannins and good acidity. Red fruit was complemented with black pepper, savoury herbs and leather notes. The finish was medium. This was a blend of 93% Grenache and 7% Matrao. This was too savoury for me and was missing fruit, however, I understand how some enjoy this. Not your typical Barossa Grenache
